2nd/4th Grade Student Artwork Featured at Iroquois Museum

Students from Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School District had the opportunity to showcase their creativity this past weekend, as selected artwork from Mrs. Lori Masterson’s second and fourth grade art classes was displayed at the Iroquois Museum.
The exhibit, located in the museum’s lower-level Interactive Museum, features student pieces inspired by Native cultures. Under Mrs. Masterson’s guidance, students explored artistic themes and techniques that reflect cultural appreciation and creative expression, resulting in a meaningful and visually engaging collection of work.
Fourth Grade Artwork – The Three Sisters: Corn
Fourth grade students explored the cultural significance of corn within traditional Haudenosaunee culture, where corn, beans, and squash are known as the “Three Sisters.” Students learned that in the Haudenosaunee story of Creation, the Three Sisters grow on Turtle Island and are considered life sustainers. Inspired by this learning, each student created their own artistic interpretation of corn—the tallest of the Three Sisters—highlighting both creativity and cultural understanding.

Second Grade Artwork – “The World on Turtle’s Back”
Second grade students were inspired by the Haudenosaunee story “The World on Turtle’s Back.” Mesmerized by the idea of a great turtle transformed into the earth we live on today, students created their own clay turtles. They learned how to roll and flatten clay to form the turtle’s body and used rolled coils to construct the head, tail, and legs. Texture plates were used to create raised designs on the shells. After kiln firing, students selected colored glazes before a final firing. Each turtle emerged uniquely, and students were thrilled with the final results.

The Cobleskill-Richmondville Student Art Exhibit officially opened this past Sunday and highlights the talent and effort of our young artists. Families, staff, and community members had the opportunity to view the artwork in a professional museum setting, making it a memorable experience for all involved.
The exhibit will remain on display through June 7, 2026, and is included with museum admission. Community members are encouraged to visit and support our students while enjoying all that the Iroquois Museum has to offer.
We are incredibly proud of our students and grateful to Mrs. Masterson for fostering creativity and cultural learning in the classroom!
